Viva Florida





This year is the 500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s arrival in the new world. As part of the Viva Florida Celebrations, there are many events going on at the public libraries this summer.

Sing Along and Laugh with Yehaa Bob is a look back on Florida’s historical past with comical flare.

Florida Treasures is a play by the Atlantic Coast Theater Group about the landing of Ponce de Leon. A fun-filled look at Florida’s beginnings.

  • Saturday, August 3rd, 1pm at the Orlando Public Library in Library Central

Dig in the Florida Sand is an arts and crafts event for kids. Come hear stories about the beach and stay to make a little craft.

  • Thursday, August 8th, 11am at the Hiawassee Branch

Preschool: F is for Florida is an arts and crafts day aimed at children 3-5 years of age. Come hear great stories, learn your ABC’s, and make a little treasure to take home with you.

  • Sturday, August 10th, 11am at the Orlando Public Library in the Children’s Library

Florida Crafts is a display of crafts that celebrate Florida and life in our great state. A free event great for children 3-8.

  • Wednesday, August 14th, 6pm at the Winter Garden Branch
  • Wednesday, August 21st, 3:30pm at the Herndon Branch
  • Saturday, August 31st, 3pm at the Orlando Public Library at the Chidren’s Library

A Musical Journey Through Florida is folk-style performances highlighting key aspects of Florida’s history.

  • Saturday, August 17th, 2pm at the Orlando Public Library, in the Library Central Building.
  • Saturday, August 24th, 2pm at the South Creek Branch Library.

Reptiles and Amphibians of Central Florida is an exhibit presented by the Central Florida Herpetilogical Society that teaches about all the creatures in your backyard and around the world. All ages are welcome.

  • Sunday, August 25th, 2pm at the Orlando Public Library in the Albertson Room

Preschool: Orange You Glad You Live in Florida is a story and craft day at the library. Fun for kids ages 3-5.

  • Friday, August 30th, 11am at the West Oaks Branch

A Visit to Bok Tower Gardens is an exhibit of the gardens and homes of the 1930’s. Come and learn about the history, architecture and horticulture.

  • Friday, August 30th, 2pm at the Orlando Public Library in Library Central
