Visioning Apopka Comes Into Focus

The City of Apopka started a seven-month project this week to envision the future of this fast-growing area.

Visioning Apopka will gather public input from across the community to develop long-term goals for city improvements. The effort also will help to plan for new public facilities and services.

City staff on Monday met with project steering committee members and consultants Keith and Schnars PA to plan for community meetings and to determine what could be the biggest opportunities and challenges for Apopka.

A public introduction with a schedule of the upcoming meetings will be unveiled on July 24. A variety of community meetings will be in September. The Apopka City Council will discuss the project later this year.

Large community forums will be held in four quadrants of the city. Dates and locations are not finalized yet. A separate meeting is planned for businesses and business leaders.

More localized meetings will be held in neighborhoods using Keith and Schnars’ mobile information station – essentially a large recreational vehicle – to present information and materials and to answer public questions. A new website will provide a central resource of information, project updates and documents.

The public can provide input at local meetings and via surveys submitted through the online website and in person. Residents and businesses in and around Apopka will receive mailed notices to invite their participation.

Establishing community vision is important to help better define Apopka among all areas of Central Florida. The city can work to develop its image – a productive reputation that reflects positively on the community and attracts businesses and residents. Apopka can identify needed public improvements, lay out community projects and complement the city’s master development plan for future construction.

Information also can help Apopka to create a unique brand or image – important to represent the community and to highlight its best features. A positive image can help to nurture community pride and to support marketing efforts.
