This week, we are getting to know the candidates with a series of articles that will give you everything you need to know about the three candidates running for Seat 3 and the three candidates running for Seat 4. Today we want you to meet Sam Ruth:

Commissioner Sam Ruth was elected to the Apopka City Council in April 2014. In his private life, Commissioner Ruth is a quality control supervisor for a large Central Florida commercial construction firm.

Commissioner Ruth is married to Annette Ruth and they are the parents of four grown children. Commissioner Ruth is a third-generation Floridian, born in Clermont and reared on a familyowned horse farm on the shore of Lake Apopka. His family moved to downtown Apopka when Commissioner Ruth was 12; he continues to live in downtown Apopka.

After graduating from high school, Commissioner Ruth attended Valencia State College and the University of Central Florida. Among his first jobs, Commissioner Ruth worked at a fabrication shop where he helped build the fern sculpture that stands outside Apopka City Hall. Commissioner Ruth has long been active in coaching youth athletic teams in Apopka, including Pop Warner football, Little League and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. He was assistant baseball coach at Apopka High School when the Blue Darters played in the 1997 and 2003 state championship games. He also was an assistant coach when the Blue Darters won the 2001 6A state football championship.
