Marine Veteran to Receive Home in Apopka

The City of Apopka proudly welcomes its newest resident – a military veteran who will receive a mortgage-free home on Friday.

Marine Sgt. Cory Lewis served several tours overseas since 2001. He was deployed in Iraq in 2003, when his unit was caught in a lengthy firefight outside of Baghdad. Lewis was left with post-traumatic stress. An unrelated back injury also led to multiple spinal surgeries.

Lewis medically retired in 2010 – one of thousands of American veterans who must adjust to often challenging circumstances of life after combat.

Lewis and his family – wife, Danielle, who served in the Army for two years, and their three sons – will be presented with the gift of a newly renovated home at 421 Vicks Landing Drive in Apopka through a unique partnership from U.S. Bank, Freedom Alliance and Five Brothers. The ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, May 1, will be attended by representatives from U.S. Bank, the two organizations and the City of Apopka.

“Our family is truly humbled by this gift,” Lewis said. “This helps relieve the primary financial burden typical of homeownership and allows for a great start to our boys’ teenage years. We look forward to this new chapter in our lives.”

Apopka provides a friendly hometown for the Lewis family with a close-knit community, good schools, plenty of recreation and a central location close to Orlando shopping, entertainment and medical services for veterans. City Commissioner Billie Dean: “Being a veteran myself – and I have two sons-in-law who also are retired veterans – I feel the community should help young people who gave so much for our freedom.”

The pride for our veterans resonates with Friday’s home donation. “It is an honor to present this mortgage-free home to Sgt. Lewis and his family,” said Edward Wooten, senior vice president, U.S. Bank National Corporate Banking. “Sgt. Lewis served America valiantly. We owe him and all servicemen and women our freedom. The community of Apopka is fortunate to have the Lewis family as neighbors.”

Born and raised in Southwest Kansas, Lewis graduated from St. John’s Military High School and joined the Marines in 2001. He served several tours overseas between 2001 and 2005.

In addition to partnering with military service organizations such as Freedom Alliance, U.S. Bank supports National Guard and Reserve employees through its Proud to Serve program, a company-wide initiative focused on hiring and supporting service members and their families. U.S. Bank also hired more than 1,500 veterans between 2012 and 2014 and received the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award in 2013 for its exceptional support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.
