Florida Hospital begins hiring for new Apopka facility

from the Orlando Business Journal

Florida Hospital has more than 700 open positions— some of which are to prepare its new facility opening in Apopka.

Land was purchased back in November 2013 on Harmon Road, near the intersection of State Roads 414, 429 and 451, for a larger facility that will replace the current Florida Hospital Apopka. The $180 million hospital will have 100 beds in all private rooms — double the size of the original. It will also have surgical services.

Brasfield & Gorrie is the general contractor of the project, which broke ground in March and is expected to open in early 2016, said Kirsten Cutler, Florida Hospital spokeswoman.

The new facility will create about 200 jobs, many of which will be high wage, including nurses, physicians, lab technicians and various administrative positions. Salaries for these jobs range from $47,000 to $187,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

More high-wage jobs in Central Florida can grow the population, as people are attracted to the area for these jobs. There will also be more disposable income in the community to spend at local businesses and increase the demand for housing and other services.

Once the new hospital is open, the original hospital’s 112,000-square-foot piece of property will be left vacant. This poses an opportunity for something new to come to the area, and here are four ideas still on the table. Cutler said there is no update on what the land might be used for.
