Apopka Joins Playful Cities Around the Country

The City of Apopka is honored to be recognized with a 2016 Playful City USA designation from KaBOOM! – a national non-profit organization that promotes playful activities for kids and partners with communities to build playgrounds.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the national recognition spotlights cities and towns across the country for making their communities more playable. This year, Apopka joins 256 other Playful City USA communities including Orlando, Winter Park, Tampa and Kissimmee.

Apopka provides leisure recreation and sports programs for all ages including summer and spring break camps for kids. The city fire and police departments also hold their own educational camps for school-age kids.

The Apopka Recreation Department hosts 65 sports tournaments each year as well as various sports leagues at the Northwest Recreation Complex. The city also has fun events such as the Old Florida Outdoor Festival, the Easter Eggstravaganza and Rabbit Run 5K, movies at the Apopka Amphitheater and the Apopka Food Truck Roundup.

“The City of Apopka provides a wide variety of public activities that promote healthy recreation and improve the quality of life for our citizens,” said Apopka Mayor Joe Kilsheimer.

Communities across the country are creating innovative ways to bring back play and attract residents through family friendly activities. Interactive sidewalk art, designated play spaces on trails and the transformation of schoolyards into active play areas are just a few examples of how cities are becoming more playful.

“We are thrilled to recognize these communities that have invested their time and efforts to put kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “Balanced and active play is crucial to the well-being of kids and the communities that they thrive in. By integrating play into cities, the leaders of Playful Cities USA are working to attract and retain the thousands of families that want homes in close proximity to safe places to play.”
