Apopka Honors 1961-62 state championship boys basketball team

Apopka Memorial’s 1961-62 state championship boys basketball team will be remembered.
The school, named Apopka High School since it moved to a new campus in 1976, will honor the title team on Thursday night at approximately 7:15 between JV and varsity home games against Evans.
The ceremony was orchestrated by current Blue Darters coach Scott Williams, who said the eight of the 10 living members of the championship squad are expected to attend.
Williams dug through newspaper archives to learn that Apopka Memorial did not lose a home game in run of three seasons (1960-63) under former coach Joe Sterling, who died last July. That included the 28-2 championship team and a state runner-up finish the following season.
Williams, who wants to honor the past while building a program for the present and future, said he hopes that by next year he can have pictures of all of Apopka’s final four teams on display in the school gymnasium.
