Of all the wins Apopka’s football team has had, Friday night’s 8A region semifinal victory over West Orange was among the biggest.

“This is a good win. It ranks right up there after losing to them earlier in the season,” Apopka coach Rick Darlington said following the 42-0 victory. “You know we have a pretty good record in rematches. I think we are 5-0 since 2001.”

Losers to West Orange by a 45-31 final early in the regular season, that outcome had little impact on the Blue Darters. But a dream season for West Orange (11-1), the No. 3 team in the Sentinel Super 16, came to a crashing halt.

“We just executed our offense, which is something we didn’t do the first time we played them,” said Chandler Cox, who scored two touchdowns and rushed for 139 yards. “This win is real exciting. This is a team win.”

Apopka (8-4), No. 8 in the Super 16, will play at Jacksonville First Coast (12-0) Friday night in the third round of regional playoffs. First Coast advanced with a victory over Lake Mary Friday night.

The Blue Darters’ domination was on offense and defense while Apopka jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead as it piled up 274 yards in the first two quarters. Its defense also came up with some big plays, including a spectacular interception in the end zone when defensive back Ray Ray Smith deflected a pass by West Orange quarterback Woody Barrett right into the hands of Laquan Hicks.

Demetri Burch, the Blue Darters’ quarterback, also had a big night, rushing for 187 yards and also scoring two touchdowns.

Apopka continued to make plays on both sides of the ball in the second half, finishing with 403 yards rushing, scoring six touchdowns on 10 possessions — including two by Cox within a 15-second span.

Cox scored on a 6-yard run with 7:24 left in the third quarter. Then after West Orange lost the ball on a fumble on the kickoff, on the very next play Cox romped up the middle for a 35-yard touchdown.

Smith also helped keep the shutout intact in the second quarter, blocking a 34-yard field-goal attempt.
