from the Orlando Sentinel

No. 6 Apopka (6-1) turned the ball over the first two times it had the ball, including an interception return for a touchdown, but the Blue Darters bounced back in a big way to defeat Olympia 46-17 Friday.

The Darters eventually got the rushing game going with 401 yards on the ground. Dekwon Wilson scored three times for Apopka.

Olympia’s Jeff James scored on the pick six to open the game. Bradley Dos Santos ended the contest with a 44-yard scoring strike from Joe Milton for the Titans (5-2).

DeShawn Massey led all rushers with 133 yards on 15 carries. He scored Apopka’s final touchdown. Wilson had 125 yards to go along with his three scores for the Blue Darters. Jordan Thompson and Demetri Burch each scored once for Apopka.

Despite having five of its top six defensive linemen out with injuries, the Blue Darters held Olympia to 31 yards rushing. The Titans gained 63 yards passing on the final two plays of the game, including the 44-yard touchdown pass from Milton to Dos Santos.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Olympia and new head coach Kyle Hayes, who took over a program that went 1-8 last season.

Apopka lost its No. 1 ranking in the Class 8A state poll last week when it was beaten 28-3 by West Orange.
