Three touchdowns in a 45-second span in the first half helped propel Apopka to a 40-6 victory Friday over host Ocoee in the season opener for both teams.

The Blue Darters are No. 1 in the 8A state rankings after winning two of the past three large-classification titles.

Leading 13-0 after a pair of first-quarter scores, the Blue Darters (1-0) took advantage of two Ocoee fumbles midway through the second period to build the lead.

DeShawn Massey started the scoring binge for Apopka, punching it in from three yards out with 5:55 left in the second to cap a 72-yard drive.

Eighteen seconds later, Demetri Burch scored on a 14-yard run after the first fumble and Jordan Thompson tallied from seven yards out just 27 seconds later, bumping Apopka’s lead to 33-0 with 5:10 left in the second.

When Dekwon Wilson scored on a one-yard run midway through the third, the Darters led 40-0.

Steve Hogan scored early in the fourth for Ocoee after the Knights returned an Apopka fumble to the 2-yard line.

The Blue Darters rushed for 258 yards, while holding Ocoee to 39 yards on the ground and 46 through the air. Apopka’s lone pass attempt went incomplete.

The victory ruined the Ocoee debut of head coach Ben Bullock, while Apopka coach Rick Darlington won his first season opener since 2010.

Next week, Apopka hosts Edgewater, while Ocoee visits Lake Nona.
