Story from the Orlando Sentinel

Apopka hit the ground running in defense of its Class 8A state championship.

The visiting Blue Darters, ranked No. 4 in the Sentinel Super 16, rushed for 435 yards Friday in a decisive 34-6 win over No. 11 Timber Creek in a Region 1 quarterfinal matchup.

Senior Dekwon Wilson found success early and often for Apopka as he tallied 240 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries.

The Blue Darters (10-1) have won five of six playoff meetings against the Wolves (7-4) since 2006. Apopka advances to face No. 1 West Orange, which they fell to 28-3 on Oct. 2.

“We’re not playing for revenge, we’re playing to move on,” Apopka coach Rick Darlington said of the rematch. “The fact they beat us earlier, maybe that’ll give us a little more fire, but once you get out in the game no one’s thinking about that.”

Apopka scored touchdowns on its first three possessions Friday and took a 21-6 lead into halftime.

After converting on two long third-down plays, Wilson reached the end zone for the first time from 15 yards out to cap the game’s opening drive.

The Wolves answered five plays later with a 2-yard plunge into the end zone by Jackson Saffold, but the point-after attempt failed.

Wilson crossed the goal line again on a 3-yard run on Apopka’s next possession for a 14-6 lead. He’d score again after breaking loose for 75 yards with eight minutes to play before intermission.

“Our line up front was a big key in this game,” Wilson said. “If it wasn’t for them, this victory would’ve never been possible.”

Timber Creek’s Preston Samoden, who completed seven of his eight pass attempts in the first half, was intercepted in the end zone on fourth down early in the second quarter.

Timber Creek went on to turn the ball over on downs on their next possession. They came up short again for points while attempting a free kick off a tee following a fair catch on a punt with seven seconds left in the half.

Each team had just one possession in the third quarter. Apopka made the most of its time with the ball by running off 11 plays and wrapping up the drive with a 1-yard run by Wilson.
