Altamonte Springs teams up with Uber to subsidize rides

Altamonte Springs will soon become the only city in the country that will help Uber riders pay their fares when traveling anywhere within its municipality — whether it’s to or from the SunRail station, the Altamonte Mall or a friend’s house.

Lauding it as an effort to encourage SunRail ridership, officials said Altamonte Springs will pick up 25 percent of the cost of using Uber to or from the city’s commuter train station on Ronald Reagan Boulevard near State Road 436, to any destination within the city.

The city also will pick up 20 percent of the fare for using Uber on all trips that begin and end within Altamonte Springs as a way of easing traffic congestion.

“It will allow our residents and visitors to travel freely around our area like no other place in the country,” Mayor Patricia Bates said in announcing the city’s partnership with Uber during a Friday morning press conference outside City Hall.
