Apopka lineman blocks out physical challenges

When Apopka defensive coordinator Jeff Rolson watches his son, Jake, he doesn’t see a miracle playing football. He witnesses an average teenager doing average things. But for Jake, being average is a miracle.

“I consider myself to be very blessed to be where I am,” said Jake, a junior nose guard who is expected to start Friday night when the Blue Darters play at Freedom. “To be able to hear and see and have an average life — the same my friends have — I am very thankful.”

When Jake was born two months’ premature in Missouri, weighing 3 pounds, 3 ounces and only 16 inches long, his father could hold him in the palm of his hand. Few could have envisioned how far the 6-foot-1, 215-pound defensive lineman would grow.
