Problem at substation causes Altamonte Springs power outage

Residents in Altamonte Springs found themselves without power for a few hours Tuesday afternoon. Over 10,000 people were without power.

Duke Energy reports a static line at the Spring Lake Substation came in contact with water, shutting down power to a large part of the west side of the city. Businesses and traffic lights were also without power. The outage was first reported around 4:30 p.m. As of 9 p.m., about 400 customers were still without power.

Static wires are the top wires along electrical poles. They help protect power lines from damage during lightning strikes.

City officials originally reported there was a possible fire.
